Le immagini prendono sempre più luce e bellezza, fino a riempirsi, nei momenti in cui Sayuri si trova con l'amato direttore generale, delle intense sfumature dei rami di ciliegio in fiore, dei colori smaglianti di un giardino giapponese in cui la luce si riflette sull'acqua, sul verde brillante della vegetazione e su alberi di acero rosso. In poche parole, un tripudio scintillante di luci e colori che rispecchiano molto la sua felicità.
La trama è abbastanza semplice, fin troppo lenta nella prima parte, ma riesce a farsi parecchio interessante con il trascorrere dei minuti, specie quando alcune vicende storiche stravolgono la realtà fino a quel momento mostrata. La storia della protagonista, si colloca in un periodo che va dal 1929 a pochi anni dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, in un Giappone, dove verso il finale, soffiano forte i venti del cambiamento, portati anche dall'arrivo degli occidentali, con le loro abitudini e idee diverse.
Il film dà la possibilità di conoscere alcuni aspetti del misterioso mondo delle geishe, un universo che ha sempre suscitato curiosità e che spesso, è stato interpretato in modo sbagliato.
La visione ridimensiona un po’ questa figura esotica del passato, dotata di grazia e sensualità, ma enigmatica per molti aspetti. Dietro i kimono, i candidi ceroni e il portamento altero, c'era prima di tutto una donna, con il suo bisogno d’amore, la sua sensibilità e cosa importante, non era proprio di facili costumi. Anche se è vero, certi discutibili riti o tradizioni prevedevano un comportamento non certo encomiabile, ma in fondo, la geisha era vittima di un sistema che non consentiva via d'uscita.
Da ricordare una pratica in uso a quel tempo, donare la verginità, la prima volta di una giovane geisha al miglior offerente, in poche parole al più ricco. Naturalmente, era un’usanza imposta da quel particolare contesto sociale e non era certo lei a decidere il tutto e a incassare il denaro.

Mi viene spontaneo pensare a come sarebbe stato il film se Spielberg avesse portato avanti questo progetto, forse le sue solite manie di grandezza avrebbero reso tutto diverso, ma in fin dei conti, spettacolarità ed effetti speciali non si addicono a una pellicola di questo genere.
Curiosità: il film è stato apprezzato molto dalla critica, come dimostrano i many awards.
